about

Last year, Half-handed Cloud's "Learning About Your Scale" careened across the landscape of independent music, establishing singer and multi-instrumentalist John Ringhofer as a refreshing, original new artist.

With twenty-five tracks crammed into twenty-four minutes, "Scale" charmed and amazed reviewers and unaffiliated listeners alike with unexpected instrumentation (trombones, talking books, and an air conditioner) memorable melodies, and a dizzying funhouse vision of The Meaning of Life. With haiku-like clarity and substance, Ringhofer's concise songs reflect a playful spirit unafraid of following the muse wherever it may lead. Committed but never pedantic, his unique fusion of the silly and serious simultaneously stimulates both reflection and giggles. Once again, Asthmatic Kitty and Soundsfamilyre join together to present a new collection of sonic diamonds by John Ringhofer and friends. "We Haven't Just been Told, We Have Been Loved," produced by John Ringhofer and Daniel Smith (The Danielson Famile), offers a new satchel of visionary vignettes, placing a delightful oddball narrative over a fractured soundscape.

Listeners are guaranteed a great time, but behind the fast acceleration and sudden stops, and the beeps, honks and whirs, HHC's John Ringhofer casts a gentle glowing light on What Really Matters.

"We Haven't Just Been Told, We Have Been Loved" will be distributed nationally through Secretly Canadian starting October 1st, and until then is available only from Asthmatic Kitty and Soundsfamilyre.

"An orch-pop masterpiece somewhere between Brian Wilson and The Red Krayola." MOJO (UK), Feb. 2003, P. 91

"Almost inconceivably complex, loaded with the unexpected, leaping into each other like water running down a staircase yet never suffering from even the slightest lack of completeness." Delusions Of Adequacy, Oct. 2002

"The record radiates conviction and sounds like a clock, but lacks all logic. Even within the extremely brief time spans of his songs, Ringhofer frequently changes pace, atmosphere and style. Is this the rescue of pop music?" Oor Magazine (Holland), #22, November 2nd 2002, P. 64

"Insane song structures, tunes, arrangements, and inspirational lyrics. Ultimately, Half-handed Cloud makes me want to hop and skip and dance all silly-like. How often can you say something is simultaneously experimental, sweet and pretty, and satisfying as rock 'n' roll?" Punk Planet, Feb. 2003, P. 131

"Ringhofer is so adept at creating stirring melodies and powerful imagery that he does not need to drag anything beyond one pass to achieve his goal." Bandoppler Magazine, Jul-Sep 2003, P. 12

"Aptly named, "We Haven't Just Been Told, We Have Been Loved" is music meant to love the listener--love as challenge, honesty, vulnerability, creativity, and comfort--and it is successful through and through. With its immaculate hooks, diverse instrumentation, and gracious tone, this album will most likely be remembered as the most accessible, affecting 'experimental' pop release of at least this year, and I cannot imagine a living soul that would not savor the opportunity to partake in it." Fine Print Mag (2002)
